Stoneware Mortar and Pestle Set

Hand-thrown in Los Angeles from granite clay, the Vermont Stoneware Mortar and Pestle has a broad-rimmed mortar with a generous pouring lip. The pestle is made from the same granite clay as the mortar, raw and speckled at the base, and partially dipped in classic white glaze at the top.

Built for Daily Kitchen Use

The glaze is free of lead and cadmium, and all clay bodies are certified non-toxic. Silica content is maximized across all glaze recipes to create a durable, stable surface that resists staining and prevents leaching. Fired at over 2000°F, this ceramic mortar and pestle set is built to withstand daily use, making it a kitchen staple.

Grind, Crush, Pour

The wide mortar bowl gives you room to grind spices, crush garlic, and mix pastes without ingredients spilling over the sides. The generous pouring lip guides ground ingredients cleanly into the dish. Pair it with the Mixing Pour Bowl and the Berry Colander to complete the Vermont stoneware collection.

ABOUT SHELDON CERAMICS

Founded by ceramicist Peter Sheldon, Sheldon Ceramics is a hand-throwing studio based in downtown Los Angeles, just off the LA River. The studio draws inspiration from the industrial landscape around it — weathered surfaces, slow transformation, the raw materials shaped by geological forces over millions of years — and channels that into minimal, functional stoneware.

Each piece is thrown by hand on a wheel, and every glaze is formulated in-house, measured to the gram and fired repeatedly until the color and finish are exactly right. The result is a palette that draws in light rather than reflects it, designed to age with the kind of quiet grace that comes from being made to last.

Sheldon's work traces the universal language of pottery — the same forms appearing across Japanese, Southeast Asian, European, and Mexican ceramic traditions — and reinterprets them with reverence and ongoing study. His stoneware is non-porous and built for daily use, the kind of pieces that become more personal the longer they are lived with.
