Sculptural Bonsai Jade Tree

Thick, woody stems and glossy green leaves give this bonsai jade tree a sculptural character. Grown as a kokedama, the jade rises from a hand-formed moss sphere, bringing the look of a miniature tree into any room.

Native to South Africa, the Jade Plant (Crassula ovata), often called the “Money Tree” or “Friendship Tree,” is known for its slow, steady growth and branching form. As stems thicken, the silhouette can range from fuller to more open forms, creating a natural bonsai-inspired shape.

A Living Centerpiece

The compact form works beautifully on desks, shelves, or side tables where its branching structure can be appreciated up close. Each kokedama comes with either a Gray Patina Tray or a White Patina Tray.

What It Needs

Jade succulent kokedamas are drought-tolerant and forgiving but respond best to consistent care—soak the moss ball every 1½–2 weeks and allow it to dry fully between waterings (firm, plump leaves indicate good hydration; wrinkled leaves signal it's time to water).

Provide bright, indirect light, but acclimate gradually if moving from a darker location to avoid leaf scorch. Overwatering is the main risk to avoid.

Light

Jade plants thrive in bright, indirect light. A south- or west-facing window is ideal.
Low Light: The plant becomes "leggy"—stems stretch and weaken. Move gradually to a brighter spot.
Sunburn: Sudden harsh sun can scorch leaves, leaving brown or white spots. Acclimate slowly over several days.

Watering

Overwatering is the most common problem. Jade plants store water in their leaves and are highly drought-tolerant.
How to Water: Soak the moss ball for 10–15 minutes. Let excess water drain completely. Never let it sit in standing water.
When to Water: Every 1½–2 weeks, allowing the moss to dry between waterings. In winter, reduce to once every 3–4 weeks.
The Leaf Test: Firm, plump leaves = hydrated. Wrinkled or soft leaves = time to water.

Environment

Temperature: 60°F–85°F. Keep away from drafts, vents, and temperature swings.
Humidity: Tolerates typical indoor humidity (40–60%). No misting needed.

Pruning & Shaping

Bushier Growth: Pinch off branch tips. Two new branches typically grow from each cut.
Tree Form: Allow stems to extend for an open silhouette, or prune regularly for a compact shape. Stems thicken and develop bark-like texture over time.

What to Watch For

Leaf Drop: Check for drafts, temperature extremes, or overwatering (root rot). Reduce watering if moss feels persistently damp.
Wrinkled/Soft Leaves: Underwatering. Soak the moss ball thoroughly.
Leggy Growth: Insufficient light. Move to brighter location and prune elongated stems.
