Hand-Blown Glass Nature Specimens

Each Hanging Glass Encapsulation is a hand-blown glass vial containing a single element foraged from nature. Laura Kramer of LBK Studio makes each piece by hand in Rhode Island. The glass is shaped around the found object it will hold. Up to 14" long, each vial tapers to a point at both ends and hangs from a length of twine.

Ways to Live With Them

Hang one where light can pass through it, group several down a wall, or tie them to a wreath or bough through the season. Because each holds a foraged element, the contents vary from the pieces shown.

The Series

Meet the Maker

Laura Kramer was a textile designer before she was a glass artist. A chance visit to a Manhattan glass-making studio led her to art degrees in glass from the Rhode Island School of Design. She also holds a master's degree in cultural anthropology from Columbia University. Her fieldwork took her to excavations in the Dutch Caribbean. That experience led her back to the studio and to objects like the Encapsulations, which sit at the edge of natural history and the cabinet of curiosities tradition.
