Fittonia Nerve Plant Kokedama

Named for the network of veins that trace each leaf, the Fittonia Nerve Plant Kokedama is a rainforest floor species from South America with foliage in deep green, laced with pink, red, or white.

Grown here as a kokedama—a Japanese moss ball form that dates back centuries—it arrives with a natural moss-wrapped base from a small family-run greenhouse in the Midwest. It tells you when it needs water: leaves droop when thirsty, then bounce back within hours after watering.

The kokedama form keeps this fittonia plant small and self-contained, so it fits naturally on a desk, nightstand, or narrow shelf where you can see the veining up close. Each plant comes with your choice of a white or gray patina tray.

Fittonia Plant Care

Soak the moss ball when it starts to feel light or when leaves start to wilt, then gently squeeze out excess water before returning to the tray. Place in bright, filtered light near a north- or east-facing window for ideal growing.

Veining shows its strongest color with some humidity, so mist occasionally in dry rooms. Keep it out of direct sunlight, which can fade the leaf pattern and scorch the leaves. See the full care guide section for details.

How to Propagate Fittonia Nerve Plant

Cut a healthy stem just below a node, with at least 1 or 2 nodes on the cutting
Remove lower leaves so nothing sits below the waterline
Place in a small glass of water in bright, indirect light
Change the water every few days to keep it fresh
Roots appear within 1 to 3 weeks
Once rooted, transplant gently into soil
Keep humidity high for the first week
New growth is a sign that the cutting has taken root

Light
Fittonia prefers bright, filtered light. North- or east-facing windows are ideal.
Low Light: Stems stretch and weaken, becoming "leggy." Move closer to a window (still out of direct sun).
Direct Sunlight: Bleaches leaf veins and scorches foliage. If moving from a darker location to brighter light, acclimate gradually over several days.

Watering
When to Water: Soak when the moss ball feels light, or leaves start to wilt.
How to Water: Submerge the moss ball in room-temperature water for 10–15 minutes. Gently squeeze out excess water. Never let it sit in standing water.
Frequency: Every 1½–2 weeks on average, allowing moss to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce to once every 3–4 weeks in winter.
The Wilt Test: Firm leaves = hydrated. Wilted leaves = time to water. Recovers within a few hours once watered.
Overwatering: If moss feels persistently damp or leaves drop, reduce frequency to prevent root rot.

Humidity
Thrives in 50–70% humidity. If leaf edges turn brown and crispy, the air is too dry.
Solutions:
Misting: Temporary relief. Mist every few days in dry environments.
Pebble Tray: Place kokedama on a tray of water and pebbles (moss above water line).
Humidifier: Most effective for consistent humidity, especially in winter.

Environment
Avoid placing near drafts, vents, or areas with temperature fluctuations, as sudden changes can stress the plant.

Propagation
Steps:
1. Cut a healthy stem 2–4 inches long just below a node
2. Remove lower leaves
3. Place in water with nodes submerged, leaves dry
4. Keep in bright, indirect light
5. Change water every few days
6. Roots appear in 1–3 weeks
7. Transplant to soil or keep in water once roots reach 1–2 inches

Troubleshooting
