Hamper Baskets from Ghana

Black-dyed and natural grass alternate in tight, even rows from base to rim on the Striped Hamper Basket with Black Handles, handwoven by artisans in Bolgatanga, Ghana. The pattern runs continuously across the full height of the body, and two leather-wrapped handles in black arc over the opening, shaped for a firm grip and easy carry between rooms.

Pattern That Holds the Form

Medium measures 16" in diameter and 18" tall. Large measures 18" in diameter and 20" tall. Both sizes stand firm under a full load of laundry or folded blankets. The stripe pattern gives it enough visual weight to work in an open room rather than a closet, pairing well with other natural fiber storage.

The Craft Behind Bolgatanga Baskets

To dye elephant grass black, weavers in the Bolgatanga district soak the stalks in a solution made from local plants and minerals before drying and splitting them for weaving. Introducing dyed and undyed strands in alternating rows requires the weaver to manage two materials simultaneously, keeping the stripe even and the tension consistent across the full height of the piece.
