Niwaki founder Jake Hobson first encountered kenzans while studying pruning and tree-training at Furukawa Teijuen nursery in Osaka. The tools he brought back to his tree farm in Dorset, England, became the foundation of Niwaki’s floral line. These kenzan flower frogs are still made in Japan from brass pins set into a heavy lead base, and they hold woody branches and soft green stems with equal grip. Place one at the bottom of a dish or vase, press stems onto the pins at whatever angle you like, and add water. No foam, no tape, no fuss.
Choosing a Size
The mini set (24 mm each, sold as a set of four) fits inside bud vases, the Beach Stone Ikebana Vase, or any narrow-necked vessel. They also double as candle stands—the pins grip a taper securely, and they pair well with beeswax tapers for a low table arrangement. The medium (61 mm, 257 g) is the most versatile size and sits well inside the Ikebana Vase or any standard table vessel. The large (80 mm, 510 g) anchors heavier arrangements—thick-stemmed branches, full seasonal displays—and works in wider bowls, pitchers, and hurricane vases.
How to Arrange with a Kenzan
Cut stems at an angle and press them firmly onto the pins. For thicker woody branches, score a small cross into the base of the stem first. The weight of the base keeps the kenzan steady in water, so stems stay exactly where you set them. Top up the water daily, and your cuts will last as long as they would in any vase—longer, often, because the pins open the stem end for better water uptake. Between uses, clean the pins with a soft brush (an old toothbrush works) and store them flat. Brass won’t rust or spoil the water. ABOUT NIWAKI
Niwaki founder Jake Hobson is a leading pruning specialist who studied pruning, tree-training, and rootballing at Furukawa Teijuen nursery in Osaka. The owner of a tree farm in Dorset, England, Jake founded Niwaki to bring Japanese techniques he’d mastered to Western gardens. He also introduced an expansive collection of Japanese tools ranging from tripod ladders and topiary clippers to super sharp secateurs and garden scissors. “What everyone appreciated is that although these things are all Japanese, they work just as well in western gardens, and on a whole range of plants,” says Jake. “Tripod ladders, it turns out, are just as useful for hedge trimming as they are for pine pruning; and of course, topiary clippers work just as well on box topiary as they do on azalea karikomi.”

Flower frog
"I had a sculptural bowl that I thrifted and had been keeping empty since it was not food-grade safe to hold my fruit. After doing some research, I discovered flower frogs and decided to buy a large one. It completely transformed my thrifted bowl into a beautiful vase for flowers. As a beginner, this is an incredible piece to have because the upkeep is simple, and it allows you to turn almost any container you like into a functional vase. This is a great way to repurpose decorative bowls and create unique floral arrangements with it!"

Kenzan Flower Frogs
"These are a perfect fit! I have the cutest vases that I love to place in various parts of my home and business. However, I have been unable to display the flowers and dried arrangements in them correctly. This is that small item that conquered the big picture."

Q&A
The frogs: I have frogs already. My problem is they slide in use…metal on container’s smooth inner surface. Do these have any sort of rubberized or non-slip on the bottoms of the frog? That would be a great thing.
Dear Patricia,, thank you for sharing your experience with us. The frogs do not have any rubberized or non-slip bottoms. But we will share your feedback with the maker.
